Things To Do In Char Dham

The Char Dham Yatra (Pilgrimage) is an annual religious journey undertaken by millions of pilgrims from all over India. This journey is considered to be very sacred and spiritual. The Char Dham Yatra is divided into four parts – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Each region has its significance and importance.

 

The Char Dham Yatra begins with the Yamunotri pilgrimage in Uttarakhand. It ends at Badrinath. The route passes through the pious pilgrims Gangotri and Kedarnath before concluding at Badrinath.  

 

Here are some of the activities that you can do while your visit to Char Dham to make your trip a memorable affair:

1.Tapt Kund, Badrinath

Tapt Kund is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand. Tapt Kund translates into English as "the boiling well".

The hot water of the Kund flows out from the ground at a temperature of about 45°C. People come here to enjoy the soothing effect of bathing in the hot waters. They believe that taking a bath in the Kund cures many ailments.

2.Mana Village, Badrinath

The last village of India is referred to as the Mana Village. Located at an altitude of nearly 3,200 metres, the Tibet border begins from this village. There are two ethnic groups living here – March and Bhotias. This place is famous for its beautiful landscapes, rich flora, and fauna.

According to local legends, one can visit the Bheema Pul, built by the physically strong Bheem.

3.Vasundhara Falls. Badrinath

Situated just 4kms from Badrinath at Mana Village, Vasundhra Falls is a beautiful destination in Uttarakhand. This place is known for its natural beauty and is situated at an altitude of 2,903 metres above sea level. Located close to the Badrinath Temple, it is considered one of the most sacred destinations. According to Mahabharat mythology, this is one of the final resting places of the Pandavas.

4.Vasuki Tal, Kedarnath

Enjoy a mesmerizing view of Mandaknini Valley and Chaukhamba peaks by reaching the lake at an altitude of 4135 meters, popularly known as Vasuki Tal. En route to this lake, you will explore the beauty of the Vasuki and Chaturanga glaciers. It is an excellent place to trek to Gaurikund, but it can be overwhelming for first-time trekkers.

5. Bhairavnath Temple, Kedarnath

Located at a distance of 500 m from the famous Kedarnath temple, this ancient temple is dedicated to Hindu Lord Bhairav. The magnificent view of the valley from this temple (as it is perched atop) is worth adoring. It is believed that Lord Bhairava is the main gana of Lord Shiva. He is also known as the guardian of the region. The diety has a dog and Trishul in hand.

6. Kedartal, Kedarnath

Also known as Shiva's lake, it is one of the highest lakes in Uttarakhand. Seated at an elevation of 4,912 m above sea level, it is one of the most stunning glacial lakes in the world. It is fed by the snowy mountain ridges of Bhrigpanth, Thalay Sagar and other surrounding peaks.

7. Gaumukh Trek, Gangotri

From crossing the unnamed streams to witnessing the jaw-dropping views of snow-clad mountains. It is a 46 km trek that takes 6 days to hike, making it one of the most rewarding treks in the Greater Himalayas. Counted among the beautiful treks in Uttrakhand, you will get gigantic views of cow-shaped Gaumukh glaciers. It is one of the primary water sources of the holy river Ganges.

8.Harsil, Gangotri

Often known as the hidden jewel of Uttrakhand, Harsil is always on the priority list of nature lovers for its pristine views. Apple orchards and pine forests surround this serene Himalayan hamlet. Plushly located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, this hill station is visited by people seeking tranquillity. 

 

9. Janki Chatti, Yamunotri

Referred as the last motorable stop on your way to Yamunotri, and the yatra for Yamunotri begins from thereon. It is believed that the hot water springs at the Janki Chatti carry medicinal properties that heal the people who take baths.

10.Sahastradhara, Dehradun

It is the place where the holy Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter begins. It is also known for its water springs that are believed to heal the ailments of the people taking baths. The place is known for its beautiful views and inhibits the helipad for Chardham Yatra.

 

11. Surya Kund, Yamunotri

It is a natural spring believed to derive its name from the God Sun (Surya in Hindi). Pilgrims take a bath in this Kund after reaching Yamunotri. They also dip the potatoes and rice tied in the fine cloth, which gets boiled in this hot water spring. It served as the mandir's prasadam, and the devotees took the remaining.
